about

I hope you enjoy this interpretation of the popular classic, Gabriel's Oboe, from the 1986 film 'The Mission' composed by Ennio Morricone.

I'm playing it here on the Balinese bamboo flute, called Suling.
To me, the Suling has a way of playing that can create very diverse timbre and thus emotional content. I feel this is due to a large amount of pitch bend at play on the interesting fipple design. For me, I enjoy the sweet whipy noises when the fipple is breaking octaves. It really reminds me of bird calls!
Needless to say, I have enjoyed the challenge of these flutes coming across into classical genres. Suling are a traditional Hindustani temple flute played in the Gamelen ensembles of Bali, Indonesia. I was fortunate to find myself in Bali once and spent time with a local healer, guide and then a traditional flute maker. As you have guessed, I brought some of the flute family back here to my home in Australia! I don't regret it.

Here in Australia we have soo much beautiful wildlife. I have made a video featuring one of my favorite local parrots, Rainbow Lorikeets to accompany this track.

The music video is on my YouTube for you to enjoy and share.

Shot in Australian nature, (just down the creek), as a tribute to the original film style. Also to my Mother & Mothers all around the world. Who do so much and foster life, that we all share.
I had not heard this tune untill last year. We were going to share this track live at Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast.
It's sure has been a pretty tough and interesting time. This arrangement feels very apt to me.

Here's how I feel it: The first stanza is played pensive, perhaps mournful or sad. Second we leave the ground, get away from ourself and witness pure nature instinct, playfulness, even cheeky. A rousing orchestral break, who doesn't like that?! Not quite enough time for a biscuit tho.... and finally the triumphant reflection, return or continuing journey.

I do hope that things are staying chipper in your world and you and your family are keeping well.

Enjoy the track & Happy Mothers Day ♥
